Training the Mind of the Athlete

The coaching staffs that prepare players spend much effort and resources in three basic aspects of training: The technical, tactical and physical preparation and that is very important; however there is a fourth aspect, the mental training or psychological training, which is equally important or more important than the other aspects.

Currently, a good physical and technical training must be accompanied by a good mental activity.
John C. Maxwell, one of the most influential leaders of today, said: "If talent were enough, then why do we know talented people who have failed to be successful?”.

While talent does not guarantee success in sports, those who wants to transcend in sports must also have a good physical preparation, technique and tactics, a balanced diet, adequate rest, and, above all, they should leave their skin and heart in training!

However, there are many athletes who comply fully with these requirements.  In spite of this, something happens inside that does not allow the "explosion" of their full potential.

Words such as "train at my best level and play below it" are common among athletes who, despite their great talent or great perseverance and discipline cannot overcome the internal obstacles that limit their potential. We must ask ourselves: How can we overcome these and other obstacles in the sporting context?

In the 60's Vince Lombardi, head coach of the Green Bay Packers, proved to the world of sport coaching that first the attitude and mindset makes the difference between a winning team and one that fails.

This developed a new ideology of coaching; ideology that in a few years, the world of non-sports companies adopted as the key to the development of their teams. This laid the groundwork for the development of what we know today as Coaching.

Several years later, in the 70's, Timothy Gallwey, a pioneer in sports psychology and tennis coach, published "The Inner Game of Tennis" in this text, it stated that the main saboteur of an athlete's good performance is the athlete himself and that there was an effective way to improve performance in sports. This weighted the importance of mental training in tennis as a key to sporting success, an idea that led him to be very successful as a coach.

According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), ‘Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses and organizations. Through a process of coaching, "the clients deepen their learning, improve performance and enhance their quality of life."’

However, many current sports coaches throughout the globe, find it confusing to hear the term "sports coaching." This is because they understand it as the action that they run into during each training or competition, particularly in teaching sport skills, game strategies and tactics or physical preparation. These actions commonly downplay the management of emotions and underestimate how they affect the athlete's performance.

It is because of this difficulty, that I prefer to speak of "coaching skills in sports”, as a series of communication tools based on the development of emotional intelligence, which help guide a process of continuous improvement, self development and self discovery of the athlete's potential and / or team, and that aims to achieve the maximum performance of the athlete in the field of competition.


Alex Marvel has developed projects which offer resources and strategies to the player himself, so that he can benefit when it is time to practice or compete. It is a compilation of techniques and proposals on how to apply behavioral psychology in football practice, the use of cognitive psychology to enhance the mood of the player, the bases and foundations of group dynamics to improve team interaction, the importance of motivation and how to implement these techniques.
